Breaking their silence: Mothers of teen Duma suspects to protest

The mothers of the Jewish youths being held on vague suspicions of involvement in the lethal Duma arson in July plan to protest on Wednesday, together with supporters from around Israel, outside the Tel Aviv home of Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home).

“We expect the Justice Minister to stop this insanity,” stated the mothers, noting that their sons have had their basic rights severely breached. It has been revealed that during the course of their detention without trial, they have been refused basic religious rights such as lighting Hanukkah candles, been banned from seeing their lawyers or family, and several have been denied medical treatment after being beaten during arrest.

“We are going out to demonstrate because our feeling is that they took our children as a scapegoat,” said one of the mothers on Tuesday. Her statement follows a statement by Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud), who last Friday admitted there is no evidence to try the suspects.

“They have been ‘delegitimized’ in society, so that no one cares about their human rights, and we are coming to say ‘stop negating their human rights.'”

Commenting on the Israel Security Agency (ISA) investigation, she noted, “the investigative sources are using any means at all to reach their goal. Starting with exerting unreasonable pressure by negating basic rights: meeting with a lawyer and even not bringing (the suspect) to court, something that has no precedent.”

She also noted the “harassment of family members at their work place and threats to harm their income”; in once incident, security forces arrested a nurse who is the sister of one suspect while she was working at a hospital.

The ISA is also guilty of conducting an “exhausting, humiliating and harmful investigation,” added the concerned mother.

“The saddest thing is that the legal system that is supposed to take care of the rights of the individual in a balanced manner with a police investigation is kowtowing before the ISA and allowing a negation of rights that are not even taken away from terrorists.”

In the protest the mothers will demand that Shaked get involved to protect the legal rights of their sons.

“We expect Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to stop this insanity. To make sure the justice system acts in the proper balance while seeking justice and truth,” said the mother.

“There’s an incident? Investigate it as you investigate all criminal incidents. Without negating basic rights. There’s evidence? Bring it, but doing everything so that there be evidence, as the Internal Security Minister said? That smells like fabrication in order to check off an unexplained case, and the legal system cannot give that a hand.”
