Economy Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party, admitted on Saturday night he has an “arrangement” with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the Likud party, according to which the sides will not attack one another during the election campaign.

Bennett’s revelation came in a discussion at the Saban Forum in Washington, where he was interviewed by Martin Indyk, who served as President Barack Obama’s envoy to Israel-Palestinian Authority peace talks.

“I was critical and I still am critical of [Netanyahu’s] policies,” Bennett clarified, adding, “He supports a Palestinian state and I oppose it. I thought that in many cases he made mistakes and I told him, and sometimes publicly, when I thought it might influence.”

At the same time, he continued, “We have an arrangement where we don’t attack each other during these elections. Last time I was strongly attacked by Likud, and ultimately we want to form a strong national bloc which, obviously in my opinion is good for Israel.”

Bennett said that his alliance with Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid after the last election was not planned but “forced the hand of the Prime Minister to take us both in”.

“Pretty much on all fronts – on the national front, on economy and on religious affairs – we had pretty big differences, so the experiment did not succeed, but I think [Lapid] is a great guy,” he added.
