Ayalon to Chinese Envoy: Tougher Sanctions Needed on Iran
May 9, 2012Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met on Tuesday with China’s special envoy to the Middle East, Ambassador Wu Sike. It was Wu’s second visit to the region.
The meeting dealt with different political-security issues and the Iranian nuclear issue was at the top of the list.
Ayalon urged the special envoy to work to have China review its policy regarding Iran, saying, “China must join the tough sanctions on Iran. Iran must not be allowed to enrich uranium, and all the fissile material must be removed from Iran and an effective supervision system must be imposed.”
He added, “It is important to continue the trend of increasing the political-economic pressure on Iran so it changes its nuclear policy and complies with its international commitment.”
The conversation between the two also dealt with the stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Ayalon said that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas “is too busy playing hide and seek and refraining from meeting face to face with the Israelis in direct talks.”
Deputy Minister Ayalon thanked the special envoy for his various actions to promote relations with Israel and for his personal contribution to the renewal of the relations between China and Israel 20 years ago.
Wu, who met on Monday with Abbas, also visited the UAE and Jordan during his trip to the region.
