Jerusalem District Court indicted Thursday a 19-year-old Arab resident of Jerusalem for attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS.

According to the indictment, Faris Sharitah planned to join ISIS by traveling via Turkey – the most common route for foreign jihadists into Syria. 

His plan was foiled, however, when he was denied entry into Turkey for traveling without a valid passport. Sharitah was arrested upon his subsequent return to Israel.

However his brother and cousin, who traveled with him, were allowed into Turkey, and from there successfully joined ISIS.

Sharitah’s case is just the latest in a series involving Israeli Arabs traveling to Syria to join the so-called “Islamic State” terrorist group.

Last month, Israeli security services revealed they had broken up a major ISIS recruitment ring in southern Israel. The terrorist cell, based in the Negev Bedouin town of Hura, shockingly involved several teachers who used their positions to indoctrinate Muslim children.

Several Israeli Arabs have been killed fighting for ISIS, including another 19-year-old from Jerusalem who was executed as a “Mossad spy” by the Islamist group, reportedly after he considered deserting.
