An Arab-Israeli resident of the village of Majdal al-Krum has been charged with spying for and aiding the Hizbullah terrorist organization.

The suspect, Mil’ad Mohammed Mahmoud Khatib, was arraigned Thursday at the District Court in Haifa on charges of espionage, contact with a foreign agent, aiding the enemy and conspiracy to assist the enemy in wartime.

Khatib was arrested in early September in a joint sting operation by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) and Israel Police during which he was asked to transfer classified information that could harm the security of the State of Israel.

During interrogation, Khatib confessed to being willing to join the Lebanon-based terrorist organization, which recruited him through Burhan Khatib, 47, a long-time resident of Denmark. He was then assigned a series of missions in Israel, which he performed, beginning in 2009.

Frequent contact was maintained by telephone and through a number of meetings abroad during which the two discussed the need to establish a branch of Hizbullah in Israel.

Milad Khatib confessed to consenting to collect and transmit information about security sites in Israel, including army bases, their location and purpose; arsenals, defense plants, how to reach the sites and other details.

He was also asked to provide details about security surrounding politicians and other public figures, as well as their vehicles and other information.

The ISA noted that Khatib’s activities, and those of his Denmark contact “illustrate the fact that the Hizbullah terrorist organization operates worldwide, including in Europe. Agents function in Israel as another arm of Hizbullah, and the organization uses them to collect information used to promote terrorist attacks in Israel.”
