Anonymous: We’ve taken down 5,000 ISIS accounts on Twitter
November 18, 2015A day after declaring “war” on the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group, the Anonymous hackers group announced on Tuesday it had taken down more than 5,500 Twitter accounts belonging to ISIS, Russia Today reported.
Tweeting from its #OpParis account, Anonymous stated, “We report that more than 5500 Twitter account (sic) of #ISIS are now #down! #OpParis”.
A spokesperson for Anonymous told Russia Today, “Our capability to take down ISIS is a direct result of our collective’s sophisticated hackers, data miners, and spies that we have all around the world. We have people very, very close to ISIS on the ground, which makes gathering intel about ISIS and related activities very easy for us.”
The group has built tools that “might be better than any world government’s tools to combat ISIS online,” the spokesman, Alex Poucher, told the network.
Aware that ISIS has its own hackers, he expressed confidence that the group “does not have hackers like we have hackers.”
“They picked a fight with Anonymous when they attacked Paris, and now they should expect us,” Poutcher told Russia Today.
Anonymous declared war on ISIS group in a YouTube video Monday, vowing vengeance for attacks in Paris that left 129 dead and hundreds injured.
“Anonymous everywhere in the world is going to hunt you down,” a hooded figure in black, wearing the group’s signature Guy Fawkes mask, said in French.
“Our country, France, was hit in Paris on November 13 around 2200 (2100 GMT) by multiple terrorist attacks claimed by you, the Islamic State,” the figure said in a gravelly, computer-altered voice.
“We are going to launch the biggest operation every mounted against you – get ready for a multitude of cyber attacks. War has been declared.”
Anonymous is responsible for several large hacking attacks in recent years and has also threatened Israel with massive cyberattacks which have mostly been a failure.
