Amnesty International’s ‘Biased’ Report on Israel

Amnesty International’s new report criticizing Israel, set to be released Thursday, is blatantly biased and aims to foment political warfare against the Jewish state, according to NGO Monitor.

The Jerusalem-based research organization charged the leftist human rights group with falsely accusing Israel of “callous disregard for human life” in its new report, which is entitled “Trigger-happy: Israel’s use of excessive force in the West Bank.”

The report’s accusations “are reckless, blatantly biased, and reflect the lack of a credible research fact-finding methodology,” said Professor Gerald Steinberg, president of NGO Monitor. “Amnesty lacks the expertise and credibility to analyze or assign blame for deaths in the context of violent confrontations in the West Bank.”

NGO Monitor notes that Amnesty International’s Secretary General Salil Shetty admitted in a February 10 Al Jazeera interview that “we are not an expert (sic) on military matters. So we don’t want to, kind of, pontificate on issues we don’t really understand.”

There are many unsupported claims in the report, such as “Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers did not appear to be posing a direct and immediate threat to life.” Other leftist NGOs such as B’Tselem have acknowledged that most Arab casualties in such cases result from violent clashes.

To highlight the lack of context or proportion in the report’s claims, NGO Monitor notes that FBI statistics reveal over 2,000 people were killed by US police between 2008 and 2012, while Egyptian forces killed over 500 protesters in one day last August.

Further, a recent report from January found the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Hamas guilty of rampant human rights abuses against Arabs under their control in Judea, Samaria and Gaza.

“Once again, Amnesty displays its disproportionate and ideological obsession with Israel,” commented Steinberg. “The report’s publication coincides with the antisemitic BDS movement’s annual week of anti-Israel activities, using demonization to promote boycotts and sanctions. Amnesty International should be ashamed of its role in exploiting the moral foundations of universal human rights to wage political warfare against Israel.”

Last Decemeber, NGO Monitor accused Amnesty International of systemically failing to advocate for women in the Middle East and North African region.
