Ambassadors: U.S. – Israel Relationship is Still Strong

November 9, 2011

Israeli Ambassador to the U.S., Michael B. Oren, and the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Daniel B. Shapiro, affirmed America’s support for the Jewish State at the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly in Denver this week.

The two ambassadors held an onstage dialogue, led by former IDF and Israeli government spokesperson, Col. (Ret.) Miri Eisen. The discussion touched on everything from the diplomats’ shared heritage of American Jewish summer camps and youth groups to their joint dream of a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

“In many ways, I have to say that the U.S.-Israel relationship is stronger than it has ever been,” Shapiro told the audience. “President Obama has often spoken about this as being more than a strategic alliance but a moral bond between the people of two democracies.”

“We are as coordinated and as closely aligned as we’ve ever been on the big issues,” Shapiro added. He noted that these issues include Iran’s nuclear program, the two-state solution and Israel’s security.

Oren expressed his hope that the Palestinian Authority return to the negotiating table rather than pursue unilateral moves in the United Nations.

“I hope that Israel, together with the United States and like-minded nations throughout the world, will prevent Iran from acquiring military nuclear capabilities,” he said. “We hope for further strengthening of the U.S.-Israel relationship and, as Dan would attest, it is a fathomlessly strong relationship.”

Oren added that the strong relationship between the two countries can always be made stronger “in the strategic area, in the cultural area, and the commercial area.”

He also called for more Jewish American youth to visit Israel on trips such as Birthright in order to keep the strong relationship going and to enforce the notion of Klal Yisrael, the sense of shared community and destiny among all Jews, regardless of where they live.
