Lady Globes Names Ayelet Shaked Woman of the Year

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home) has been named “Woman of the Year” for 2015 by the Lady Globes magazine.

In her interview with the magazine, Shaked discussed her attempts to shake-up Israel’s High Court as well the backlash and criticism she has received from women on the Left.

“I clearly make an effort for the state to back up the communities in Judea-Samaria, through the High Court division. Together with the Defense Minister, we are employing the most creative tools for this purpose,” Shaked said.

As to changing the system of selecting judges to the High Court, Shaked argued the “method…should be more political. In a country where the High Court is very activist and a policy-maker, the dominant factor in selecting judges should be the judges themselves.”

Despite her aim to revamp Israel’s justice system, Shaked says she gets along quite well with the Chief Justice: “We consult on a daily basis and meet every two weeks. Most of the appointments to the Judicial Selection Committee were agreed upon by both of us.”

The Justice Minister also dismissed criticism from left-wing politicians, accusing them of cynically exploiting her statements.

“I don’t think a politician should be a punching bag,” Shaked stated. “I noticed that mostly women were the attackers. This is blatant propaganda on their part. Maybe it’s because they’re in the opposition. It has outraged the Left that the right-wing is in power.”

The annual Lady Globes list of Israel’s 50 most influential woman, to be published Tuesday evening, tracks modern women serving in senior positions in such areas as government and politics, economics and finance, society and culture, law, science and more.
