Yisrael Beytenu has filed the third no-confidence motion against the 34th government of Israel since it was sworn in earlier this month, the party announced Sunday, over Israel’s inability to successfully deter Hamas.
The full reason behind the no-confidence motion is listed as “the weakness of the government against Hamas rocket fire against the citizens of Israel and the continuing policy of containment through avoiding provoking the enemy.”
The bill will be presented Monday during a Knesset session; another no-confidence motion from Yesh Atid over the distribution of Foreign Ministry powers will be presented during the same session. This is the first no-confidence motion for Yisrael Beytenu.
“Less than one year after the end of Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, terror organizations signal from Gaza that they are not deterred and that the happiness of [Israeli] residents will once again be broken,” the explanatory note to the bill reads.
“The policy of containment that is being wielded by the Prime Minister weakens Israel, fatally wounds the effectiveness of our deterrence and allows terror organizations to prepare for the next round, when it is clear that it is not within the government’s interests to overthrow the murderous terror regime of Hamas.”
Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman has called on numerous occasions for Israel to pummel Gaza, as well as retake it for Israeli soil.
Defeating Hamas entirely was one condition of his coalition talks with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu before the formation of the current government, and the latter’s refusal to acquiesce to this demand is one of the reasons Liberman cited in his resignation as Foreign Minister and refusal to join the government.
