Most Israelis Believe the Holocaust Could Be Forgotten

More than 80% of Israelis believe that the Holocaust will be forgotten within the next few years, according to a poll by the Center of Organizations of Holocaust Survivors published Wednesday.

Also according to the poll, which comes several days ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day in Israel, 42.2% of the public think the memory of Holocaust affects daily decision-making on both a national and personal level.

The survey was conducted among a representative sample of 500 people of the adult Jewish population in Israel, according to NRG

36.6% of respondents believe that the Holocaust will become viewed as one small incident among a sea of historical events, according to the survey; 45% believe that such a possibility exists, and only 17.5% believe that the Holocaust becoming insignificant is an impossibility.

Interestingly, the responses varied considerably by age – with 30% of respondents aged 55 and over insisting that the Holocaust will always be viewed with greater significance, vs. just 17.4% of adults aged 35-54 and 11.5% of respondents aged 18-34 affirming that to be the case.

By contrast, 28.8% of senior citizens, 37.6% of 35-54 year-olds, and 39.6% of 18 to 34 year-olds believe that the Holocaust could fade in national consciousness.

The respondents also varied significantly by socioeconomic status. Less-educated and poorer respondents were more likely to insist that the Holocaust will remain remembered, whereas more well-educated (B.A. graduates or higher) and richer respondents were less optimistic.

In a separate question, 42.2% of respondents overall believe that the memory of the Holocaust is still with the Jewish people on a daily basis, both on a personal and national level. 10.1% believe that the memory of the Holocaust is solely a personal affair, whereas 26.9% believe that the Holocaust is primarily an issue of national commemoration. Only 15.5% of respondents stated that the Holocaust has no impact on everyday life.
