Tragedy struck during the intermediate days of Pesach (Passover) during which many Israelis are on vacation, as one 40-year-old hiker enjoying the holiday fell to his death on Tuesday afternoon.

The hiker was touring Nahal Og located northwest of the Dead Sea in the Judean Desert, when he fell down a 50 meter (over 160 feet) cliff face.

Rescue crew volunteers with the Judea and Samaria district police were called to the scene, and after locating the fallen hiker were forced to pronounce his death.

The volunteers began operations to recover the body of the hiker with the aid of the IDF.

Initial investigations into the cause of the fall has revealed that the hiker fell off the cliff into the valley while walking on a path above, although the direct circumstances of why he fell remain unclear.

Earlier on Tuesday rescue team volunteers saved a 51-year-old woman who broke her leg in Wadi Kelt, also in the Judean Desert.

A Magen David Adom (MDA) crew evacuated her to the Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital in Jerusalem for treatment.

Elsewhere in Israel, rescue teams in the Golan Heights were called to save a 70-year-old man who fainted during a walk on the Al-Yahudiya path. A medical team that was part of the dispatch provided him with treatment.
