Woman Gives Birth in Snowstorm on Jerusalem Street

As a massive snowstorm set in upon Israel nationwide Thursday night, Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics got an urgent call and helped a woman deliver a baby on the streets of Jerusalem.

At 11:51 p.m. on Thursday night the call came in, notifying that a woman was about to give birth on Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Druk Street in northern Jerusalem.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and began transporting the woman to the hospital, but were forced to stop on Chaim Bar-Lev Street due to road closures and the onset of the birth.

The MDA crew, led by paramedic Aluma Simon, were undeterred by the difficult conditions and were able to deliver a healthy baby girl to the 25-year-old mother, her second child.

After the birth, the MDA crew were able to evacuate the newborn and the mother in a heated emergency treatment vehicle to the Bikur Cholim Hospital in central Jerusalem.

“Ambulance births always make us tense until the first crying of the baby is heard,” said Simon. “But tonight in the snow the birth required even more attention due to the cold outside and the dangerous roads.”

“I’m happy that the birth ended well and wish the family mazal tov (congratulations) on their new daughter,” she added.
