MK Alex Miller (Yisrael Beytenu) filled a petition Thursday morning moving to forbid radical Arab MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) from running in elections for the 20th Knesset.
Members of the Likud, Jewish Home, and Shas parties also joined the petition.
Zoabi has openly supported Hamas – the Islamist terrorist movement sworn to Israel’s destruction – on numerous occasions, most notoriously when she voiced sympathy for the Hamas murderers of three Israeli teenagers last summer.
That statement earned her a six-month ban from the Knesset plenum.
“I am pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached between various factions in the national camp to formulate a request to disqualify MK Hanin Zoabi from the 20th Knesset,” Miller stated.
“This morning an application to that end has been submitted to the Central Elections Committee by the Yisrael Beytenu party, on whose behalf I serve as representative on the Central Elections Committee.”
“Given the extreme and intolerable number of times Israel’s enemy, MK Zoabi, has trampled on the values and symbols of our country – inciting against it, giving support to terrorist organization in their armed fight agains the State of Israel – I hereby appeal to the members of the Central Elections Committee to grant my request and disqualify Zoabi.”
During elections for the 18th Knesset in 2009, Yisrael Beytenu petitioned to disqualify Balad, Zoabi’s party, from running for the Knesset.
The Central Elections Committee, headed by Judge Eliezer Rivlin, accepted their petition, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court.
Last month, MK Danny Danon (Likud) began collecting signatures from members of the Central Elections Committee in an effort to disqualify Zoabi from running in elections for the 20th Knesset.
Danon’s campaign was based on article 7A of The Knesset Basic Law, which disallows candidates who call for “armed struggle, by an enemy state of terrorist organization, against the State of Israel.”
“Hanin Zoabi’s dangerous and radical ideology against the State of Israel requires us to prevent her from running for the Knesset,” Danon said in a December statement.
