A riot ensued in the Ramat Shlomo neighborhood of Jerusalem Wednesday night shortly after the terror attack near the Shimon Hatzaddik neighborhood, in which an Arab terrorist rammed into a crowd of people, killing one and injuring 13.

Passengers on an Egged bus and passersby thought that a fender-bender between a car and the bus was another attempted “car terror” attack, bringing hundreds of people out into street followed by police and ambulances, the Kikar Shabbat web site reported.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. Wednesday when a woman got out of her vehicle, complaining that an Egged bus had hit her from behind. Several passengers got off the bus and joined in the argument, offering to act as witnesses for the driver. Quickly the knot of people expanded, with hundreds of neighborhood residents gathering to see what happened.

Apparently a rumor began spreading that the car had attempted to smash the bus in a possible terror attack, setting off panic among some people in the, by now, very large crowd. Someone fired a tear gas canister in the direction of the central argument, with the gas striking the bus driver in the face. A scuffle then ensued, with pushing and shoving eventually deteriorating into fistfights.

Police arrived on the scene a few minutes later, dispersing the crowd and summoning ambulances. The injured were all treated on the spot. No arrests were made.

Witnesses told Kikar Shabbat that the situation was confusing, and that it took most people some time to realize that they were not witnessing a terror attack.

“The scene was very similar to those I have seen at terror attack scenes, including the one earlier Wednesday,” one witness said.
