The rate of IDF combat service by Jewish youth in Judea and Samaria – ‘settlers’ in mainstream media language – is 60 percent higher than the countrywide rate.

Last month’s infiltration of an IDF base in Samaria by approximately 50 youth was headlined for days by local and foreign media as supposed evidence of an allegedly growing rebellion among “settlers,” although police later admitted that most of the youth involved in the incident were from urban centers.

Data from the IDF draft in December 2011 shows that 67.1 percent of the draftees from Judea and Samaria serve in combat roles, compared with the national average of 39.5 percent. The statistics were reported by the Hebrew-language Makor Rishon newspaper.

‘Settlers” also serve as officers at a rate approximately double of those in the country as a whole, nearly 16 percent compared with 8.3 percent.

Overall, 81.2 percent of males in Judea and Samaria who were eligible for the draft enlisted in the IDF last month, compared with the national average of 74.8 percent.
