Egypt’s new president, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, promised on Sunday to “defeat terrorism”, saying that security is a priority, Al Jazeera reports.
Hours after his inauguration, the former army general said there would be a new era for all except those who “turn to crimes and violence”.
“Defeating terrorism and achieving security is the top priority,” said Sisi, adding there would be “no leniency and truce with those who resort to violence.”
“I am looking to a new era built on reconciliation and tolerance … except with those who committed crimes or used violence as a tool,” he said, according to Al Jazeera.
“I am saying clearly that those who shed the blood of the innocent and killed … the sons of Egypt, they don’t have a place,” said Sisi.
Analysts have expressed hope that Sisi will bring a climate of change to Egypt, which is still reeling for ongoing political turmoil since the 2011 “Arab Spring” and 2012 ouster of former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
Official results released last week indicated that Sisi had gained 23.7 million, or 96.1 percent of the valid votes cast in the polls.
Since Morsi’s ouster last July, hundreds of Islamists have been placed on trial, and his Muslim Brotherhood has been outlawed and designated as a terrorist organization.
Asraf Abdul Ghaffar, a senior member of the Brotherhood, told Al Jazeera that he believed many in Egypt did not recognize Sisi’s presidency.
“Sisi is not the president. Morsi has not resigned. The legitimate president is Mohamed Morsi,” he said. “Sisi has cracked the Egyptian community.”
