Assad Drags Golan into Propaganda Campaign

The official Syrian government news agency SANA claims Israeli Druze in the Golan Heights rallied to “stand by their motherland Syria.”

“The people of the occupied Syrian Golan stressed that terrorism which struck in Damascus on Friday reflects the criminality of the armed groups and their sponsors,” SANA reported as part of an-out campaign that tries to convince Syrians that an overwhelming part of the country backs Syrian President Bashar Assad.

SANA published more than a dozen pictures of supposedly spontaneous rallies, one of them in Majdal Shams, the Druze city on the Hermon mountain range.

“Hundreds from [the] Golan expressed condemnation of the twin terrorist attacks which claimed the lives of scores of citizens, stressing standing by their motherland Syria against challenge,” the government agency stated.

“The people of Golan said that the attacks prove the scope of conspiracy against Syria, voicing readiness to sacrifice their blood for preserving the dignity of Syria,” it added.

The published photos did not include any from Homs, the province where secret police and soldiers have murdered and wounded thousands of protesters since the uprising began nearly 10 months ago.

Even as Arab League observers arrived in the country view the situation first-hand, more than 13 people were killed by machine gun fire Monday morning in the province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

One group of the 50 observers may visit Homs on Tuesday, when Assad can be expected to orchestrate the tour to “protect” them from alleged terrorists. The other 10-man groups are scheduled to visit Damascus and three other areas.

Assad has avoided carrying out his own agreements to an Arab League plan that calls for the withdrawals of Syrian troops from residential areas.
