A national defense drill will be carried out in schools across Israel Monday, for children and teenagers from preschool until high school. 

The “code red” siren will sound tomorrow at 10:05 am, signaling the beginning of the intensive drill, which will end at 12:00 pm. 

The exercise, which is mandated by the Ministry of Education, will be held in conjunction with the Home Front Command, the local municipality, the Israeli police, Magen David Adom (MDA), and the Fire and Rescue Authority.

The Ministry of Education noted Sunday that the drill is the culmination of efforts by the various ministries and authorities to prepare the nation’s school system for emergencies or attacks. 

Exercises during the drill session will include determining “safe spots” to duck under in the event of an earthquake or rocket fire, how to transport wounded students or staff to a medical assistance center, what happens in the event that police forces need to enter the school building, how to load injured students or staff onto an ambulance, how to use a fire extinguisher, fire evacuation procedures, and a special exercise from the Home Front Command. 

Education Minister Shai Piron, CEO of the Ministry of Education Michal Cohen, and Home Front Command Director Major General Eyal Eisenberg will personally participate in the exercise as it unfolds at the Ulpana Bnei Akiva in Pisgat Ze’ev, Jerusalem. 

In addition, local mayors will be joining the drill throughout the country. 

After the intensive drill and a lunch break, each school will also perform a school-wide simulation of emergency procedures in the event of a rocket attack at 1:00 pm.
