The European Union has no plans to boycott Israel, according to Martin Schulz, President of the EU parliament.

Schulz addressed the issue of a potential boycott while taking questions from journalists following an event Tuesday evening at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

“Boycott is a very tough word. To boycott means to completely block cooperation and trade between countries. We are not speaking about such a boycott,” he stated.

“In the European Parliament there is for sure [sic] not a majority for a potential boycott,” he noted.

Schulz noted that there is a movement in Europe to label products produced by Israelis in Judea and Samaria (Shomron). However, he said, there is no plan to boycott all Israeli goods or institutions.

Schulz added that he personally opposes the idea. “My personal view is that a boycott is not a solution for anything,” he declared.

The EU boycott of Israeli businesses in Judea and Samaria has been seen as a tool to pressure Israel in negotiations. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has warned that the EU’s one-sided pressure will only make it harder to achieve peace.
