On the 50th anniversary of the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy, CBS News has released the original Dallas police tapes recording the chaos from November 22, 1963.
The tapes, sent to CBS by the University of Virginia, provide the police’s point of view of the shooting while it was occurring. Police describe the crowds that appeared to watch the presidential parade; when the car turned onto Elm Street, a shot rang out – causing panic in the streets.
“I think something has hurt the president,” declared the police chief. Sirens blared as the motorcade rushed to assess the scene. “It looks like the President’s head has been blown off,” he continued.
