Syrian Mortar Shell Falls in Central Golan

A mortar shell fired from Syria fell on the Golan Heights Tuesday evening. The shell fell in the area of Tel Fares, in the center of the Heights. No one was injured and no damage was reported. IDF troops were on alert for additional firings.

Officials said they did not believe that the shell was fired purposely at Israeli territory, but that it veered off course when it was fired either by Syrian rebels or Syrian army troops, who were engaged in a fierce firefight Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, the IDF fired a missile at Syria in response to a barrage of shots that were fired at Israel from over the Syrian border. The shots had come from a position held by Syrian Army troops. No Israelis were injured by the shots, but an IDF jeep was damaged.

IDF officials said that they were prepared to respond to any Syrian provocation, but would only respond in the case of ongoing provocations, and not one-time events.
