As Jews around the world celebrate the holiday of Passover and commemorate the nation’s journey from bondage to redemption, the Jewish community of Minneapolis was forced to contend with a distressing situation.
Upon gathering for the traditional Passover Seder, congregants at the Temple Israel in Minneapolis found that a vandal sprayed the word “soap” on the temple’s doorways, windows and signs, in what appears to be a possible reference to Nazi atrocities during the Holocaust.
“To arrive this morning to vandalism of the graffiti was upsetting and shocking,” congregant Marcia Zimmerman told CBS News.
“As we know, the Jewish community, especially this time of year, collectively and historically has been at the end of much vandalism in the past,” Zimmerman added.
Security cameras in the building recorded at least one person in the act, just before midnight. The video is being turned over to Minneapolis police to aid in the investigation, according to CBS.
