Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Sunday that his country had resumed contacts with Israel, despite the freezing of diplomatic relations in 2010. The contacts were resumed during Operation Pillar of Defense in an attempt to work towards a cease-fire, Davutoglu said in a televised interview, quoted by the Anatolia news agency.

“In the Gaza process, it’s true, Israel held discussions with Turkey through Foreign Ministry and secret service channels. If it means preventing blood from flowing, if war conditions are met, we meet everyone. There is nothing wrong with that,” Davutoglu said.

Davutoglu said, however, that the contact did not mean the countries had resumed relations, which were broken after nine Turkish Hamas supporters were killed on the Mavi Marmara flotilla ship, after they participated in an attempt to murder IDF troops.

“From the Turkish point of view, these kinds of meetings and sometimes the transmission of various messages through intermediaries do not constitute dialogue with Israel,” Davutoglu said. He added that for the countries to resume dialogue, Israel would have to apologize for the deaths of the Turks, and agree to pay compensation. Israel has rejected those conditions.
