Romney, Ryan, Slam GOP Rep. for Skinny Dipping in Israel

Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan today criticized GOP Rep. Kevin Yoder of Kansas, who, it has been revealed, went skinny-dipping in the Kinneret last year during an official trip to Israel.

“I think it’s reprehensible,” Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, told WMUR-TV in New Hampshire.  “I think it’s another terrible mistake by individuals.”

Yoder, a freshman elected in 2010, issued a statement last night after Politico reported that the FBI investigated a late-night swim last summer involving several freshman lawmakers, congressional aides and alcohol.

More than 20 people reportedly took part, but Yoder was the only one to swim unclothed.

Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman and chairman of the House Budget Committee who was recently announced as Mitt Romney’s running mate in the upcoming presidential elections, told WMUR that Yoder’s conduct “is unbecoming of a member of Congress. It’s behavior that shouldn’t be tolerated.”

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., who was the highest-ranking member on the trip, but who was not present at the incident, also reprimanded Yoder and the other lawmakers for their behavior.

“Twelve months ago, [Cantor] dealt with this immediately and effectively to ensure such activities would not take place in the future,” said Doug Heye, Cantor’s deputy chief of staff.

Yoder apologized to his colleagues and constituents saying, “It is my greatest honor to represent the people of Kansas in Congress and [for] any embarrassment I have caused for my colleagues and constituents, I apologize.”
