A ceremony marking 30 years since the 1982 destruction of Yamit will be held Monday in the Knesset.

The ceremony was initiated by the Center for Memorializing Gush Katif and Northern Samaria – areas in which Jewish communities were similarly razed many years after Yamit, in the 2005 Disengagement.

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, MK Uri Ariel and representatives of Sinai communities will address the participants. Prof. Yiftach Bar-Asher, who heads the Katif Center for the Study of Coastal Deserts, will give a lecture on the contribution of agriculturalists in Sinai and Gush Katif to agriculture in Israel and the world.

Mochi Better, Director of the Katif Center, explained that the former residents of Gush Katif and Northern Samaria feel a deep connection to Yamit and the Sinai communities.

“During 35 years of settlement in Gaza we used to mark Yamit Day at the Neveh Dekalim Hesder Yeshiva and we feel a deep connection to the residents of that area, many of whom moved to Gush Katif after the eviction.”
