Thousands of Hareidi Religious Jews Wait to be Drafted

Thousands of hareidi religious Jews are waiting to be drafted, according to Interior Minister and Shas party head Eli Yishai, who paid a visit Monday to the “Sucker’s Tent” outside the Knesset, where protesters are demanding that all Israelis serve in the IDF.

Yishai told the protesters that thousands of Jews who have not yet served are actually waiting to do so.

“It is time to tell the truth, and remove the mask of hypocrisy from the politicians” and pressure them to direct the IDF to draft hareidi religious Jews, which Yishai added the army would apparently prefer not to do.

The tent had been dismantled several weeks ago, but was resurrected for a Knesset discussion this week on a law proposed by Yisrael Beiteinu to require all Israelis to either serve in the IDF or in national service.

Shas is expected to decide during a Knesset session Monday night whether or not to support a bill to disperse the Knesset in preparation for new elections in September.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told a meeting of Likud MKs that he saw no alternative to breaking up the government and moving to elections, rather than allowing small parties to “blackmail” him.
