Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is expected to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan, two highly placed Republican sources told Fox News Friday.
The endorsement comes just days after Trump declined to back Ryan when asked about it in an interview.
Ryan will face primary challenger Paul Nehlen in next Tuesday’s primary election for his congressional seat. Trump is expected to endorse the 2012 Republican vice presidential nominee at an event in Green Bay, according to Fox News.
While Ryan picked up the endorsement of Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump declined to endorse Ryan when asked in an interview this past Tuesday with The Washington Post.
“I like Paul. I like Paul. But these are horrible times for our country. We need very strong leadership. We need very, very strong leadership. And I’m just not quite there. I’m not quite there yet,” Trump said.
Trump’s use of the phrase “not quite there yet” echoed Ryan’s own hesitancy to back Trump. When asked if he would endorse the billionaire in May, Ryan told CNN, “I’m just not ready to do that at this point. I’m not there right now.”
Ryan ultimately declared his support for Trump in June, though since then he has been critical of the Republican nominee , most recently over a controversial tweet which featured a picture of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton superimposed over a pile of cash, next to a red six-pointed star, which some claimed was a Star of David – a fact which Trump rejected.
Trump seemed to soften his stance on Ryan Thursday, calling him “a good guy”, noted Fox News.
