Missing Jewish teen girls found in Orlando swamp

Police in Orlando, Florida conducted a massive search with helicopters and search dogs to try and locate two Jewish high school girls from Miami, who disappeared on Saturday afternoon. Later on Sunday the two were found by a helicopter alive and well.

Rivka Moshe and Bracha Katz, both 16-year-old students at the Lubavitch Educational Center’s Beis Chana High School in Miami, were taking part in a school Shabbaton at the Caribe Cove Resort near Wyndham in Four Corners, to the west of Kissimmee.

At around 3 p.m. on Saturday they took a Shabbat walk, and were supposed to return at 5:30 p.m. Since then there had been no sign of them until a search helicopter on Sunday located them in densely forested swampland adjacent to their hotel.

The girls were only several thousand feet from the hotel but due to the density of the trees it took nearly an hour for the rescue team to reach them. After being found, rescue teams reunited them with their families who came to Orlando when they were reported missing.

As it was Shabbat the girls were not carrying a cell phone, money or any means of transportation, and apparently they got lost in the swamp.

Police had listed details on the girls to help in the search, noting that Bracha Katz is 5’8” and 130 lbs., with blue eyes and blond hair. She was wearing a black dress and a red sweater. Rivka Moshe is 5’6” and 120 lbs., with brown eyes and black hair. She was last seen wearing a gray skirt and green floral shirt.

As the police continued their search, the girls’ families asked the public to pray for Bracha Tefillah bat Yisraelit Rivka and Rivka bat Tzipora.
