Irem Aktas, a member of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party, posted a tweet today, reading “I wish that the wounded Israeli tourists were dead.”
She deleted the account shortly after posting it, but not in time to prevent a strong backlash over her lack of sympathy.
Aktas, who is responsible for the party’s digital communications and holds the party’s Women’s Media Publicity Chair, also wrote “when Israel was attacking your Muslim brothers, why didn’t you say anything,” i24 reports.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said, “We are looking into the issue with the Turkish Foreign Ministry. If it is correct, then it is clearly a disgusting and shocking statement, and we expect an apology and a renunciation.”
Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu offered a relatively kinder message, tweeting: “Even though they are foreigners, they are human beings as well.”
Three Israelis were killed in today’s (Saturday) attack, while another 11 were wounded.
