President Obama Wishes Israel Happy Birthday

US President Barak Obama on Tuesday conveyed to Israel the customary White House well-wishes for Israel’s 64th birthday.

Obama’s sentiments were conveyed to President Shimon Peres in a letter on the eve of Israel’s two day Yom Hazikaron [Memorial Day] and Yom Haatzmaut [Independence Day] celebration in a letter dated April 18, 2012.

“Dear Mr. President,” Obama wrote.

“On the 64th anniversary of Israel’s independence on April 26, I wish to extend warmest regards and congratulations on behalf of the American people.

“Based on our shared values and interests, the bonds between our two countries are deep and strong. In a time of momentous change, the United States remains steadfast in its commitment to Israel’s security and a comprehensive peace in the region.

“As we work together to pursue common goals and meet shared challenges, I wish the State of Israel continued prosperity and a peaceful future.

“Sincerely,

“Barak Obama”

Obama is expected to honor Peres by awarding him the Medal of Freedom during the Israeli president’s visit to Washington in June.
