63 dead in Pakistan hospital bombing
August 8, 2016At least 63 people were killed and over 120 wounded in a suicide bombing in the city of Quetta, in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.
The blast occurred in the entrance to the emergency room in a hospital, in what appears to have been a followup attack to an earlier assassination of a prominent lawyer.
Earlier today (Monday), Attorney Anwar Kasi, President of the Balochistan Bar Association, was shot and killed by two unknown assailants. As his body was being brought into the hospital, surrounded by lawyers and journalists, the suicide bomber set off the explosion, murdering dozens of them.
It is as yet unknown who was behind the assassination and bombing, as Pakistan is home to many militant groups with varying agendas, including Taliban-affiliated separatist groups. This attack appears to have targeted lawyers, and several lawyers have been the victims in several recent targeted killings in Quetta.
Reasons offered by local analysts as to the reason for targeting lawyers include the fact that they are less guarded than police or politicians, and the fact that lawyers as a group are likely to be vocal and garner a lot of publicity.
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed “grief and anguish,” and vowed to fight against terror in the region. “No-one will be allowed to disturb the peace of the province. The people, policy and security forces in Balochistan have given sacrifices for the country.”
