A 47-year-old woman from Syria who was seriously wounded by a mortar round that exploded close to her home was brought on Thursday to the Ziv Medical Center in the city of Tzfat.

Relatives who brought the woman to the border with Israel told IDF soldiers who were stationed there that the woman was wounded two days earlier in Daraa and received treatment at a local hospital, but her condition continued to deteriorate.

A lack of medical services in the combat zones in Syria caused the woman’s family to decide to bring her to the border with Israel, from which point the soldiers took her to the Ziv Hospital.

The woman’s right hand has been amputated above the elbow and her left leg has been amputated below the knee. In addition to this, she is suffering from shrapnel wounds to her right leg. After initial treatment the woman was transferred to the operating room at the Ziv Hospital, where doctors are trying to save her right leg from being amputated as well.

The woman was able to tell the doctors that she is a mother of eight children, who were by her side when the mortar shell hit their home. She noted that she is worried about her children’s safety since she does not know what happened to them in the explosion. The woman also said that she was treated in Syria, where the doctors amputated her arm and leg, before she was brought to Israel for treatment.

Throughout the civil war in Syria, Israel has treated hundreds of wounded Syrians who have been brought to its borders.

There are currently 12 Syrians undergoing treatment at the Ziv Medical Center, including a 12-year-old boy. So far, 366 Syrians have been treated at the hospital. Other hospitals in northern Israel have received Syrian patients as well, including the Western Galilee Hospital in Nahariya and the Rambam Hospital in Haifa.
