The city of Tel Aviv has started a new initiative to fight cruelty to animals. Roughly 30 volunteers are undergoing training that will give them the authority to work with police, with a focus on animal protection.

The volunteers will be official police volunteers with the power to act as police officers. In addition, they are undergoing special training with the NGO Israel Animal Defense Force.

When their training is complete, the volunteers will be responsible for responding to any reports involving animal cruelty. In addition, they will meet with students in local elementary schools and middle schools to explain the importance of treating animals with kindness.

The Israel Animal Defense Force previously initiated a similar program in the city of Kfar Saba.

The NGO’s primary goal is to address what it views as severe under-enforcement of existing laws against animal cruelty. It is also involved in education and awareness-raising regarding animal rights, and in caring for animals that have been abused.
